Thanks for the link. Being removed from the situation, I have no right to agree nor disagree with the critics, but I think I agree with the critics in their sensibilities. One of my biggest surprises in my one and only collaboration with a conductor was to learn how important conductors are. Before, I’m afraid I viewed the conductor as a figurehead. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
Now I know that the conductor is the single most important person in the orchestra, and the single biggest influence on the end result. I respect the opinions of disciplined, talented musicians who are miffed when they are subjected to poor conducting. It is hard to imagine somebody taking their baton cavalierly.
