Evidently mysterious theories about the ark were floating around (pardon the pun) even during the time of Theophilus of Antioch in the second century. He wrote,
“Moses indicated that the deluge lasted for forty days and forty nights, when cataracts flowed from heaven and all the springs of the abyss gushed forth so that the water was raised fifteen cubits above even the highest mountain. Thus the whole human race then existing was destroyed; the only ones saved were those who were preserved in the ark, the eight already mentioned. The remains of the ark are to be seen to this day in the Arabian mountains.”*
